Hatupatu | Kurungaituku:
A Forbidden Love
Content Creation | Show Programming & Playback
An immersive production combining breathtaking aerials, kapa haka and dance-theatre. Based on the Te Arawa kōrero of Hatupatu and the bird woman.
We created an ephemeral visual language to depict the physical and emotional world of the show.
Our process involved filming and scanning real-world locations from where the story originates, this was an important part of the kaupapa for this work. The footage and scans formed the basis of our visuals. We then processed them through Notch to get the final look.
We also custom-trained our own diffusion model to produce elements that we were unable to depict through film in a way that stayed true to the nature of the visual language we had developed, such as bubbling mud (below, top left). The model was trained on the footage, WIPs and our previous work.
